Not that long ago Internet was open for everyone, but over the last years government has been actively fighting against unacceptable information on the web. Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications (so called “Roskomnadzor”) is a Russian federal executive body responsible for blocking webpages and enlisting forbidden content into the unified register. Striving to protect people from harmful content such as porn, propaganda of violence and drugs, the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media is sometimes unscrupulous towards web resources and bans harmless websites. What is more, access is blocked not only to specific “unlawful” information, but to the whole website. Especially in Russia 93% of websites were blocked without any reason. Sometimes the whole domains are blocked because of one suspicious website. Different gambling resources are also massively blocked. If a website gets on the black list, it is automatically blocked, so that Russian users are not able to access it. That’s why owners of gaming websites should regularly check the status of their resources at http://eais.rkn.gov.ru/.

But despite such strict operating methods of the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media, Internet users have found lots of ways to bypass website blocking. Some of them require considerable efforts and skills and can appear a hard nut to crack for ordinary users. But there are simpler ways of bypassing the block, which can be used by people who are not so good at information technologies.

DNS and IP blocking

Before highlighting the main and most efficient ways of bypassing the block, we will review the types of blocks.

The Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media compiles the list of websites that need to be blocked by domain names and IP addresses. Providers get this list and are obliged to block the access to listed websites, and they can do it in two ways:

  • DNS blocking. When passing to DNS server user’s computer instead of IP address gets address that directs him to the page notifying about the block.
  • IP blocking. In this case user’s computer connects by IP address not with server of required website, but with provider’s server that will notify user about the block.

Depending on the type of blocking there are several efficient ways of bypassing blocks from the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media.

Using alternative URL addresses (for casino operators)

Imagine that your online casino, which operates efficiently and is popular among players, gets into blocking blacklist. Use one of the most widespread ways to continue casino activities without any losses – change the domain name and IP address. It isn’t necessary to change the name completely; you can add a symbol or a letter, change or delete something from the name. For instance, if your website address is bestcasino.com, you can add only one digit - bestcasino7.com in order for the name to remain common and recognizable by users.

You can ask how players will find out about the new name. Casino can inform users about change of address in a variety of ways, for example, on a popular information portal, in mass mail message, or with the help of customer support service.

Using public DSN (for casino players)

If you are lucky and casino website is blocked only by domain name, there is a possibility to unblock it by changing your provider’s DSN server to public DSN server.

The pattern of such unblocking is quite simple. Go from Control panel of your computer to Network and Sharing Center section, choose your network connection type – it can be wireless or local area connection, in the dropdown box choose Properties section > click twice on Internet protocol 4 (TCP/IPv4) > and in the newly opened window featuring properties of this protocol specify the preferred and alternative DSN of any public server.

Using proxy servers and additional plug-ins

Another way to avoid blocking systems is to use off-site proxy servers providing new IP addresses for visiting forbidden websites.

Proxy server is an intermediary server processing your request for the access to the blocked webpage. After processing such a request, a user gets redirected from the proxy server to the necessary address and vice versa. Meanwhile, providers are able to track only requests to the proxy server, but not to the forbidden resource.

Principle of implementation of proxy servers

Proxy server addresses can be easily found in the World Wide Web and installed independently through the settings of your personal browser. You can avoid blocking by “Roskomnadzor” in the following way: in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Yandex browsers find network settings and manually type in the digital address of the proxy server in the open address bar of the port and activate your network activities through a proxy. One of the drawbacks of this approach is that in such a way proxies do not function for a long time. The second pitfall is the low speed, especially if proxy servers are geographically distant or are designed for a limited number of users that eventually prevents from big number of requests. For this very reason there exist alternative ways – additional plug-ins.

The majority of browsers are equipped with a function enabling to use additional tools, so called plug-ins, that are based on reliable and verified proxies. The list of additional plug-ins may be found in the settings of any existing browser; they are easily installed and are troubleproof.

Popular plug-ins for unblocking

For instance, Mozilla provides a whole list of additional tools to avoid blocking. It’s better to choose from plug-ins with the biggest number of stars put by different users. Such tools are the best in terms of functioning. One of the drawbacks of such an approach is low speed and, not all proxies support Flash formats.

Popular plug-ins for unblocking

The most popular plug-in for unblocking websites in Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Yandex browsers is ZenMate. This kind of application creates a special connection route providing enciphered access to the blocked resource. You may choose a country from where you want to access the forbidden webpage, while the program provides your computer with an alternative IP address of the proxy server in the chosen country.

For Yandex browsers you may additionally download the FriGate plug-in that automatically unblock forbidden webpages, though doesn’t react to free access webpages. FriGate is equipped with an extra Proxy plug-in for Chrome with additional options for advanced users, as well as some of the tools in Light format with a basic set of functions. You may download such tools on the official webpage https://fri-gate.org/ for free.

We should also mention about some of the unblocking tools like Privatix, Hide My Ass! And Stealthy for the Firefox. The latter enables to choose from different modes of anonymity in settings. All of the applications mentioned above can be downloaded for free through settings menu of your browser, particularly in the tab “Plug-ins”, or you may find some developer websites and download from there.

Installation is easy and takes literally seconds. Plug-ins are free of charge or partially free as long as you can upgrade them to premium-versions to get additional options for an insignificant price.

Special features of Opera browser

Opera is practically the only existing browser capable of avoiding blocking by “Roskomnadzor”. Opera has a standard VPN function enabling to bypass bans on visiting certain webpages, as well as IP blockings. Taking into account that the said browser is widely used on smartphones and mobile devices, VPN function is available for all types of Androids.

Opera can be easily downloaded from the Internet and installed on you r PC or mobile device. You can activate the VPN function in Opera through its menu of settings. In order to do so, tick the necessary option in the ¨Security¨ tab. Your subsequent actions through Opera will be automatically enciphered by the browser.

The activation the VPN function in Opera

You may also ensure the anonymity of your access to forbidden websites by making use of the function called ¨Turbo¨ available both in Opera and Yandex browsers. Activate this function by putting a tick right next to ¨Turbo¨ inscription. This function enables to connect your computer to the server of the developer. All of the transmitted data gets compressed, so that the level of traffic lowers and eventually the speed of transmission increases. Providers can only track the fact that you are connected to developer’s server , though your further actions are unknown to them. Through your request the server connects to any existing webpage, including forbidden ones.

Programs to avoid bans for Windows

In order to bypass bans you can also download special software. Among free applications for Windows you may find such programs as CyberGhostVPN, VPNBook and FreeVPN enabling to access VPN proxy servers. These applications encipher all your traffic, not only your surfing history. The request from your computer is redirected to the proxy server located in some of the countries stated in the offered list, it can be adjusted either automatically or manually.

The only pitfall of such applications is the limited time of functioning. For example, CyberGhostVPN provides only three hours of enciphered browsing which means that you have to refresh your access after the stated time passes. If you want to ensure seamless functioning, purchase the premium version of the same program. You can download this program from the official webpage of its developers. For advanced users who understand the principles of functioning of the enciphered channels of connection, it is better to use a browser called Tor. This kind of software provides complete anonymity online and troubleproof access to any website. It is quite complicated to adjust this browser to your personal needs. Another drawback is that the majority of providers block connections through Tor, so that browser cannot connect to the proxy.

Anonymizers

Anonymizer is a special Internet resource that allows user to remain anonymous on the Web, meaning that he will be able to visit blocked websites without any worries about IP identification. As a matter of fact, anonymizer is a kind of proxy, but meanwhile proxy can be adjusted via browser settings, anonymizer is represented by a separate website. Thus, having linked to anonymizer website, user enters the address of required website into the search line and is transferred to the desired web page. This method is very convenient, and there are lots of anonymizer types on the Web. The disadvantage of this method is the fact that there is no possibility to play in flash version.

To sum up we would like to note that the simplest method of bypassing the block won’t necessarily be the most efficient one, allowing player to seamlessly enjoy his favourite casino game. If you are determined to continue using the website of your favourite online casino, spend some more time and install additional plug-ins or applications in order for the system to work automatically, and you won’t have to use anonymizer each time when you need it.
